Attack 1 : Personal Life
She was born on May 4, 1916 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Jane Jacobs and her family relocated to Toronto, Canada in 1968. She died on April 25, 2006, in Toronto, Canada. Her first of many works on the urban environment, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, was published in 1961. In the novel, Jacobs explored what makes a neighborhood vital and how that clashed with contemporary thinking on urban planning.
Attack 2 : Urban Planner
She rallied against the push to modernize urban areas by tearing down established neighbourhoods. She introduced ground-breaking ideas about how cities function, evolve and fail, that now seem like common sense to generations of architects, planners, politicians and activists. A firm believer in the importance of local residents having input on how their neighborhoods develop, Jacobs encouraged people to familiarize themselves with the places where they live, work, and play.
