After the defeat of Batista, Fidel Castro took power and imposed a communist ideology on the nation. In 1960 Castro made a trade agreement with the Soviet Union which in turn lessened the trust of the United States and severed ties between the two countries.

Illustrator : Key Events After the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, Castro took power inspired by communist ideology. Relations with the Soviet Union led to Cuba acquiring nuclear weapons and missiles with the intention of using them against the United States. The Cuban Missile Crisis was one of the closest points to nuclear war that could've destroyed the world 22 times over. The United States imposed a trade embargo on the nation of Cuba in hopes of damaging their economy and also in turn for their relation with the Soviet Union. Cuba had a lot of economic dependence on their trade with the Soviet Union and the economic collapse of the Soviet Union caused a great impact of the economic stability on the nation of Cuba.
