In 1901 the Dutch adopted what they called the Ethical Policy, under which the colonial government had a duty to further the welfare of the Indonesian people in health and education.

Attack 2 : Independence
Indonesia became independent in 1949. Its independence hero was Sukarno. After independence, the Indonesian economy had to recover from the hardships of the Japanese occupation and the war for independence, on top of the slow recovery from the 1930s Depression. During the period 1949-1965, there was little economic growth.
