The first ever earth object sent to space, the Sputnik was a small satellite fixed with radio antennas that was sent to space by the USSR on October 4, 1957. This was a huge shot to the US and their sense of superiority over the Russians, and this was the official start of the space race which would eventually end when US astronauts walked on the moon.
