Prevents telomeres from getting shorter. DNA is never lost during replication. Cell can divide indefinitely

After DNA is replicated, a short piece of chromosome is lost. Telomeres are end caps which prevent this. However, telomeres get shorter and eventually runs out. Hence, DNA begins to be lost after replication
